New Man in Town

A show that name after the main character of the show. A show that the main character is a lawyer who hear music and hallucinate real singers singing in the apartment. Not to mention whatever the hallucination is, it often related to the plot of the episode. Yeah, it's true that it is a description for Ally McBeal, but no, it's not what I am talking about this time, I am actually describing a new show called Eli Stone! Well, except that the main character is a guy, and unlike Ally, he has a real reason behind his hallucination - a brain aneurysm. Ironically that is the same condition Ally's one true love Billy had - Billy also had a brain aneurysm that causes singing and dancing hallucination. Billy died eventually because of the brain aneurysm.

I just watched the first episode, it's quite likable not only because it reminds me of Ally, but some of the cast has their own charm as well. Title character played by Jonny Lee Miller has that quirky geek quality with him that I like. Any show that give more face time to the great Victor Garber is always good. I am not familiar with the actor who played Dr. Chen but he sure is a fun character as well. And the surprise casting of Tom Cavanagh as Eli's late father is awesome! I love that guy! He's so great every time he show up in Scrubs as JD's older brother. I wonder if we will see more of him in later episodes since the plot explains that he might had the same kind of hallucination his son has.

10 years ago in 1998, Ally McBeal debuted. 10 years later, there's a new man in town! (if you are an Ally McBeal fans, you'll get the inside reference! :) )

Crunching my finance

I stayed home this entire weekend because I was trying to save money. I calculated that I spend an average of 60 dollars if I hang out on a weekend, so by staying in, 60 bucks saved. So why the sudden urge to save? well, it's because I realize this year I have 2 weddings to attend in LA, one in the summer, one in the fall. I look up the price for the plane tickets, it's in the range of $400-600 round trip, double that means I will at least spending a thousand bucks, that's not counting hotel! not to mention it's weddings, dinner ain't free, plus gifts as well. It's for my best friends so it's all okay, but with that in mind, I do have to take a hard look at my financial plans for the year. Luckily this year there's no plan for any computer purchase, no plan for any more iPhone/iPod purchase. As for clothes, I banned myself from shopping for clothes last month until the summer, but it looks like the ban will extend all the way to next January as a result.

One of the most curious item is the camera. I was going to replace my camera this year, but now I doubt I can put it as a priority. But then again weddings are probably the kind of event that would use the camera the most! So I dunno, it's up in the air right now.

Of course now it also affect my bigger plans and projects, I don't want to be like the MTA, with a whole lot of big capital projects in mind but have no money to complete any~~~ so these projects i have in mind are:

1) traveling plans - I haven't been on a real trip since 2005 and I was thinking this could be the year to do so. Well, that obviously is not going to happen, but at least I am going to LA, that's a trip I suppose, hopefully I can do touristy things too instead of just going to the wedding and then come back home immediately.
2) Plan to upgrade to wireless N network - I have that idea floating around for a while, upgrade my wireless network from G to N. This plan would require me to buy a new router, my choice would be the Time Capsule from Apple which is also a backup external hard drive. I also need to buy wireless N card for my roommate's computer and my good old powerbook. With about $700 at stake, this plan is definitely out the window.
3) Project White Space - I don't want to give up this project because let's face it, I am not a social butterfly, I don't have boys calling me left and right to go out. At the end of the days it's this tiny little room and its four walls that keeps me company. I have been stalling to do anything with it because I have this stupid idea that this apartment is "temporary". I live here since 05 and given the outrageous rent of New York, I am force to stay at the same place for a while. So I think I owe it to myself to start this project. The bright side is, it's the cheapest of all the projects in my head, with a price tag of about 200 bucks for phase 1.

If only I have a job that pays so that I don't have to think about which plan I need to give up...

Project White Space

My friend recently renovated his tint apartment and it looks totally refreshing. It's amazing how a fresh coat of paint and some rearrangement can do to the space. Of course that inspired me with a million idea about my own place. I never really invested a lot to my own apartment. I have always viewed it as an intermediate step toward my own place (since right now I am sharing it with my roommate). I never thought I need to do a lot with the space I have because to me, it's just "temporary"! Well, in the beginning I did have many ideas and only got discouraged because any changes outside of my room need to consult with my roommate first, he shot down many of my ideas and our taste just doesn't really match.

Another friend of mine just move to a new apartment in Queens and once I found out about how much he paid for his apartment - I realize I am gonna be staying in my apartment for a while - I can't afford whatever price is going on right now! Rent everywhere are way expensive than I would ever imagine and I am lucky this place is rent-stabilized. So after reality hit me in the head, I know I am going to stay in this "intermediate step" for quite some time. In that case, I should do something with my apartment. Or just my room to start. It will be more than the look because another issue I am encountering is that I am running out of space for my clothes. I have been good and stop buying clothes since last month, and even clean out some old ones, but I really needed more space. So I am formulating what I can do next.

I am one of those freaks that whenever I start something, I need a plan, a detail proposal, a well-thought out procedure of what to do, think about the goal, the mission, the benefit, the side-effect before I actually do something. So here is my plan, codename Project White Space:

Goal: 1) Create more storage space for my clothes and gadgets/stationary;
2) Unify the color scheme of my room to match my iMac;
3) Replace the old desk and some unmatched drawer units.

Steps: 1) Locate white, silver /option black lining desk and drawer units in the IKEA catalog 08. Also locate designer style storage boxes.
2) Measure the dimensions to see if it is feasible.
3) Calculate budget and difficulty level of assembly and transportation.
4) Figure out how to assemble furniture.
5) Figure out the logistic of the replacement procedure.
6) Assessment of the project, plan what's next.

Candidates:
1) GALANT desk foil/steel.
2) HELMER drawer unit Powder-coated steel.
3) ANEBODA 3-drawer chest White foil finish/polypropylene.
4) NOSTALGISK media box with lid or KASSETT magazine boxes with lids

Other considerations:
1) should I paint my giant closet's ugly brown slide doors? or stick some nice fabric/wall paper to cover it up?
2) use the opportunity to finally frame that large map from Amsterdam and put it on the wall?
3) more hooks on the wall?

...If you are still reading this, you will probably be enlisted to help me assemble things cos we all know how useless I am when it come to home improvement~ :p

Starbucks' master plan

After hearing the news about every standalone Starbucks (7,100 of them!) will be closed for 3 hours from 5:30-8:30pm on 2/26/08 for a supposedly "training session." I can't help but thinking what will the training about? and did all the McDonald closed for training before? what about Dunkin' Donuts? Isn't the whole thing just a little bit strange? Some humorously put it as something evil is going on, some suggested it has to do with the whole switching Wi-Fi from T-mobile to AT&T (with a suggestion of Apple is the master puppeteer behind the curtain). I am leaning toward the latter as well since the timing of everything is too coincidental.
Luckily I don't drink coffee and those hours are not the time when I would be hanging out there using their Wi-Fi, so it won't affect me. But it will be interesting to see what will be happening after that?

My treat

It's V-day again. But more importantly, it's also the 3 years anniversary of my powerbook. It's actually kinda sad because it's the end of the Applecare so from now on, if he breaks, I'll have to pay to fix him. He's still in a pretty good condition, and tonight I'll give him a nice "wash" to make him all pretty and clean.

I got myself a little treat too, well, not so much little, but definitely awesomely cool! It's the watch that I have my eyes on for a couple of weeks now. One of the Fossil's S+ARCK collection by the famous designer Philippe Starck. It's not the newest design, but I really like it. I have only two watches, one that I have been wearing since college from Swatch and a formal fancy one from Kenneth Cole. The one from Swatch if you count the years it's been around for a very very long time. I don't think I have any gadget that old at all. Once I saw the S+ARCK watch, I knew I found a replacement and can retire the Swatch.

A picture is way better than my description, so here it is my new watch and all its glory:

Eason Chan's concert

Even though I have been to a fair number of concerts, this is actually my first ever Cantonese concert! so I was very excited, not to mention Eason's friends with Miriam. I kinda feel like I am one step closer to see Miriam in concert~ :)

The concert was in Mohegan Sun Casino in Conn., the same place I went to last year to see Leehom Wang's concert. Since this time we are driving instead of waiting for those damn slow bus, it felt a lot faster even if it's two hours each way. It is the weekend of Chinese New Year as well, so obviously the place was filled with Chinese. The loud lion dance was also in full force as well, it even dance into the concert arena which to me is a little strange, but whatever - even though the concert did start 20 mins later than it suppose to.

Because this is part of a concert series continued from Hong Kong, so I kinda have an idea of what songs he would be singing and what costumes he would be wearing, but it still amazes me (the costumes and the music choice). He first come out in white literally like a bride, then have 6 or 7 costumes change that is not just merely switching jackets. I once again forgot to bring my camera (seems like it become a habit), but luckily I can still use pictures from others. Just look at the pictures, that are quite "alternative" style - especially the one i would called the kimono rain coat! It comes with a hood too~ haha~ I liked the "King of Karaoke" Tee! it's just the words on his tee that was made out of mirrors but man when the spotlight was on him, the reflective effect is amazing~

As for his music, it's hard to argue he is defacto number one singer of this generation in Hong Kong right now. I don't even have to say more, I would have like him to sing some more of his classic songs, but the current rundown is still very satisfying. I know it's much shorter in length compared to the original concert in Hong Kong, but to have just a chance to see him in concert, I have no complains.

Evolution of Zombies

Finally have a chance to watch Resident Evil: Extinction. I have always found the Resident Evil series to be entertaining and usually a good B movie, this last of the series is no exception. (they will probably make a fourth eventually, but until then~) It's a refreshing take to the genre because this time most of the film take places in board daylight, in the dessert - you know, a setting more appropriated for the mummy! Zombies in the traditional popular culture sense just don't go out during the day, but the "zombies" here does so this is interesting. Although they are still the slow moving brainless type, however later in the film there's an "enhance" version that are very agile and vicious, a so-called super-zombies. Another regular appearance are zombie creatures, it was usually the zombie dogs all through the series, but this time there's the zombie crows take it to the sky in mass number! That's nightmare in the making!

Other than these variations, the film is pretty much standard zombie affairs with a group of human, got killed one after another, with someone got infected but try to hide it and become a hazard within the group. But there's a shocking ending in the end that will change the direction of the entire series if there's more sequels - and it remind me of series finale of Buffy! but instead of vampire slayers everywhere were "activated" so that the lone heroine's power is shared and gained allies, we got the lone heroine here cloned and it implied that she will "activated" her clones one by one to form an army to battle the evil corporation and the entire undead population of the world. I found the parallel situation quite interesting. Not to mention what a game-changing plot it is. And who doesn't want to see hundreds of Milla Jovovich kick some zombie ass? If only they make another sequel to show us that~ It is curious how both Buffy the Vampire Slayer and the Resident Evil series put in such a game-changing plot at the very end of their run? as if it's there to tease the audience about what will happen next.

Personal Touch in Workplace

I was talking with a group of friends and the topic somehow become how we put personal touch into our work environments. One talked about how he put Ikea furniture into his lab, while another one talked about how much that he re-arrange his classroom that other teachers started comment on it. Those are extreme cases to have such an autonomy to do that, i think most people some pictures are change the screensaver or have some of his or hers own stationary on the desk, maybe even a bowl of candy (you know who you are!), or a staple remover with eyes~ :p

For me, I don't have that luxury at all. I don't have an office and the reference desk is well, a reference desk. Any other librarian would use it when it's their shift. Not to mention there's no drawers to put personal items in. The chances to put personal touch to my job is very slim. That's why ever since the beginning I insisted that I do all my handouts and presentation for the classes I teach, I insisted on using Keynote and Pages on my own mac instead of using Powerpoint and Word. It's all unique designs and helped my creativity a flow. But they are certainly not everyday event, if there's no class to be teach, I wouldn't be doing handouts and presentations. I needed something that is everyday. You might said what about customizing my computer.....while, the desktop background is fixed with the organization's logo, so is the screensaver. I am lucky to be able to install Firefox, that's pretty much it!

I am going around trying to find something that I can put my own personal touch on...and I found it! the library's website! Now I am not gonna change the whole website even though I really wanted to because frankly the design and color scheme pretty much stuck in the 90s! I can only do the part that I am suppose to (dvd list!), and without much autonomy because it has to stay in sync with the rest of the site and the whole library systems. So my only options are pathetically stuck with just font, font color, and spacing! That's quite alright I said to myself, I know I can change a lot even with that little bit of freedom. First business is to banish the horrified Times New Roman back to Roman time! (HA!) Then change the font to either Lucida Bright or Garamond depends on the situation. Immediately the page looks a hell lot better! Then I change the terrible Navy Blue the school used and the boring black into different degree of light sky blue or pale turquoise. Last but not least I even put the dvd covers to the list! Given the limited freedom I have, I am quite happy I can change the look to tolerable. I would have love to change the boring sidebar and get rid of that bloody murdering my eyes spinning disc gif!!

So that's the boring tale of my pathetic attempt to personalize my workplace...by changing font! haha

Discovering Val

I love discovering new artist. I guess when it come to new music, it's just like new gadgets for me, I am an early adopter~ I usually listen to new singers before they become mainstream and before anyone know their names. So here is another unexpected new discovery:

I was watching the latest episode of Cashmere Mafia, where Lucy Liu's character have a thing for her friend's new sexy "manny" Adam. Now this guy is a total babe and was steaming up the screen. But I know I've seen him somewhere before, so I spent 15 minutes trying to place him. (The episode was new and imdb didn't list the actor's name yet) Eventually I realize he was the 20 years old Jamie that was dating Tina Fey in 30 Rock's episode "Cougars"! (wow, seems like this guy always chooses the roles of romancing older successful women! haha) Anyway, his name is Val Emmich. And to my surprise he is an indie singer from Jersey! I listen to his songs on his website and on Youtube and yeah I dig his sound! I will try to get my hands on his albums...in the mean time, thank you Tina Fey and Lucy Liu to put such a cute singer on my radar~ haha

Only happens in movies and TV

When I read this list about how things happened in movies and TV that are not rooted in reality, the funny one that caught my eyes are the geeky ones:

17. If you are heavily outnumbered in a fight involving martial arts, your opponents will wait patiently to attack you one by one by dancing around you in a threatening manner until you have defeated their predecessor.

18. If a microphone is turned on it will immediately feedback.

22. No matter how savagely a spaceship is attacked, its internal gravity system is never damaged.
Which one is your favorite? hehe

Late Night Feud

The writers are still on strike, so what did the late night talk show hosts do to fill their time? Well, create an argument that would last multiple episodes and eventually led to a crossover between the talk show hosts! I love Conan O'Brien, Jon Stewart and Stephen Colbert! They are just awesome on their own already, but with this feud, it's a once in a lifetime moment for them to crossover in all of their shows, here's clips from all 3 shows, it's an epic fight! lol

Mika Concert

This is probably the gayest but most entertained concert I even been to. All the previous concerts I've been to, from Regina Spektor to KT Tunstall to Jason Mraz to Imogen Heap, most of them are pretty simple, just the performers, their bands and the instruments, nothing fancy because their focus was the music. For Mika, you get the whole show! There's all kind of props and costume changes. Before the concert I wasn't sure if he is those studio singers that can't sing live, but his energetic and flamboyant performance really proved that he can sing live and put on a show!

From the flowers arrangement on the stage to the giant curtain that covers the entire back I know it's a very difference show that the simple, all about the music kind of show that I am used to. The show started with lights behind the curtain showing a giant balloon in the middle of the stage - which pops and jumped out a girl dancing, then Mika jumped out with an all white ensemble that only someone that campy can pull it off, anyway, he was singing Relax, Take It Easy. I was surprised that the stage was extended toward the audience too, from where I was standing I didn't know. It was quite nice to have feature so that he can come so close to the audience. It definitely benefit short people like me who is constantly blocked by other taller individuals.

Next song take the stage to a whole new level - a gigantic blow-up doll of a big woman in the background, and then comes lots of plus size women dancing for the song Big Girl You Are Beautiful, it's quite awesome. Song after songs the show used many kind of props and costumes, from giant puppeteer representative of a gentle Death to a shadow theater of bad bunnies and the wolf, to big balloons and raining a godzillion tons of papers for Lollipop. For a show in such a small mid size venue, I really don't expect that they put this much work into it! My favorite part of the show was during the song Love Today, where the drummer was drumming on the guitarist's guitar while he's still playing!! It's a unique kind of face off!! Then Mika take it up a notch by taking his shirt off and have a drumming contest with his drummer. I have to admit that was kinda hot and fun!

If you heard Mika's music, you know it's really pop and campy, there's probably the first thing that come to your mind. But if you listen to the lyric, the songs are actually quite meaningful (Big Girl and Billy Brown) and sometimes down right sad. Lyrics like "I tried to live alone/But lonely is so lonely, alone/So human as I am/I had to give up my defenses/So I smiled and tried to mean it/To make myself let go" or "This is the way you left me, I'm not pretending, No hope, no love, no glory, No happy ending/This is the way that we love,Like it's forever,Then live the rest of our life/But not together." How can anyone not choke up with that kind of lyrics? My favorite song in the show was Happy Ending. It was so powerful and touching, I had a hard time holding back whatever trying to coming out of my eyes.

My big complaint of the night wasn't directly to the show but to the people attending. The Mary-Kate generation! (Might have been the Hannah Montana generation for all i know!) the rude 20 years old girls who has no concept of personal space! They are loud and pushy, (and smells too!) Then there's this drunken hooked figure coming out of nowhere standing right in front of me blocking my view the whole time! not to mention the dancy girls right next to me who all of the sudden started smoking! It was a horror! I almost wanted to call 311 and tell the Mayor that someone is smoking indoor! Despite all that, the show was really awesome that I was able to stand this type of behavior for a little while.

Once again I forgot to bring my camera, so all pictures are from TooHotty! thanks! :)

Flickr reaction to Micro-yahoo!

Flickr has been under Yahoo! for a while, and since Yahoo! pretty much gives a hands off approach to Flickr, and even closed down Yahoo! Photos in favorite of Flickr, there wasn't any big reaction or protest or anything during the reign of Yahoo!, but with Microsoft's hostile takeover of Yahoo! might become a reality, Flickr users are having strong reactions to the news. Just look at this Flickr group that gathered more than a thousand members and have about 150 creative photos in protest of Microsoft. This one is my favorite: Remember him?

Dream: The Pips

The dream started with me going to the store to order contact lens. Obviously I can't pick up immediately so I have to go back the second time. However, the second time I went back they still don't have it available yet. I was disappointed and walked away. I passed by a wedding dress boutique and saw a familiar face in the store. It was my friend W. I was surprised because she's already married but here she is, in the store wearing a wedding dress! She signaled me to come in so I did.

I asked her why is she there and why is she wearing a wedding dress. She said look closer, it's not a wedding dress. And it's not, it's a white dress with shells all over it, she called it the Hawaii dress. We were sitting on the couch when we were talking, and the crack in between the couch and the wall was moving. Dogs and cats were coming out of there and they grow to dinosaur size!! Worst they wreak havoc in the store and we were forced to run. There were many curtains in the store, we ran behind one after another until we reach a place that look strangely like a giant music box.

There is a plastic figure right in the middle. We hide behind the plastic figure and looking to the situation right in front of us. There's a group of guys standing guard against the giant dogs and cats. They are no match for the furious animals. Their clothes were ripped apart, they were injured. Then all of the sudden, the plastic figure sang. I realized who she is.... she's Gladys Knight! She's singing Midnight train to Georgia and me and my friend have to play the parts of the Pips! We are the background singers/dancers of plastic Gladys Knight!! Apparently the music clams the giant animals and they stop attacking.

Then it dawns on me that the the group of guys are toy soldiers and the dogs and cats didn't grow to dinosaur size - it was us who shrink to toy size!!!

----------------------------------------------------------------------

I can trace back some of the elements of this dream from real life:
1) I need to order contact lens real soon, it's running out.
2) I re-watched an episode of 30 Rock featuring Gladys Knight and her song Midnight train to Georgia.
3) I have no idea why W was in my dream~ haha

Mind blowing news week

From the biggest sex scandal in Hong Kong entertainment industry, to Motorola exiting phone-making business, to Microsoft's formal offer of purhcasing Yahoo!....It's certainly a mind-blowing week!

The sex scandal in HK....what can I said? I am not interested in the pictures (except the ones with the guy in it~ hoho~), I am more interested at the unfolding of the entire event and the mystery behind it. I mean the plan to release the pictures online everyday is genius, especially when people believed the picture was fake and immediately the next day more pictures of the same scene showed up as if just to make the statement that these pictures are real! And then the reactions from the company and the police involved. It's like the best drama ever! ( I know it's actually sick and will probably costed the careers of the stars involved, but hey I am just an oversea newswatcher!)

Motorola - I never had a Moto phone, but no matter what they did make two iconic phones from two different generations that people would remember - StarTac and RAZR. It will be weird to see a giant like this disappear into the history and never make phones again. Motorola without phones is kinda like Kodak quit the photo business, it just doesn't sound right~

Microsoft buying Yahoo! - my first reaction is like oh WTF, Microsoft don't understand Online world at all! it's not in their DNA, and they will so screwup all the good Yahoo! services people use. Case #1: just look at Hotmail(or shall we say Livemail or whatever stupid name MS change it to) and Yahoomail, you know which is better~ I am so moving everything to my Gmail and .Mac and leave my ancient Yahoomail account behind! Case #2: Search - there's a reason why MSN search or Live search or whatever name that is, is always in the third place. Google and Yahoo know how to search, Microsoft don't! Case #3, MS still make the bulk of their profit from desktop applications and OS, you think they would really have a good vision for the online? there's just a basic contradiction within their business! Just like the conflict we have seen before within Sony - having both hardware branch and music media company branch make they difficult to react to the new age of digital music. MS will have a similar problem.

Not to mention Microsoft is so self-centered that any merger will not be really a merger, merge mean combining two. When MS merge with Yahoo! it will be a takeover instead, a complete destruction of the innovative online culture of Yahoo! Imagine Yahoomail become Live mail! Imagine the homepage of Yahoo! become MSN! the horror!!!! I can't even begin to think about the autonomy Flickr and delicious is enjoying right now under Yahoo! that would surely be gone!

Maybe I am biased because I am an Apple person and uses many Google products, but I just don't think Yahoo! selling itself to Microsoft is a good idea!
